Here We Fucking Are

· 6 min read

I started drinking gin and tonic around five.

At some point there was no more gin.

So now it's vodka and Sprite.

There is yogurt.

There are peanuts.

Music is playing.

At the other end of the bed, the gargoyle is passed out under a blanket.

The gargoyle is my giant fucking dog.

She has absolutely no opinion about any of this.

Honestly, she may be the wisest creature involved.

Discount Store Marcus Aurelius and the Cart Business

· 7 min read

Discount Store Marcus Aurelius had finally accepted the shopping cart.

Not emotionally.

The cart was still a piece of shit.

One wheel remained fundamentally opposed to civilization.

Clack.

Clack.

Clack.

But Marcus understood.

The wheel was outside his control.

The cart was his responsibility.

Push the fucking cart.

Simple.

Then Bubbles showed up.

Cleanup on Aisle Four

Marcus Aurelius was Emperor of Rome.

He commanded armies.

He governed millions of people.

He wrote Meditations.

Two thousand years later, apparently, the motherfucker works at a discount store.

And his shopping cart has one fucked wheel.

Discount Store Marcus Aurelius

I spent part of tonight talking to a Serbian woman about Stoicism.

Because apparently this is my fucking life now.

She was talking about her parents. About the system. About how things should have been different. People should have known better. Parents should have done better.

And I understood exactly what she meant.

Because I used to think the same fucking way.

Consequences

Consequences.

I keep using this word and people keep trying to turn it into something moral.

Punishment.

Justice.

Revenge.

"You did something bad, so now you deserve what happens to you."

No.

That's not what I'm saying.

A consequence is simply something that happens because something else happened.

That's it.

No judge required.

Boyan Is Dead. Meet Uncle Ben.

· 10 min read

Boyan is dead.

I'm not.

I don't mean that dramatically. There was no ceremony. No grand decision. No morning when I woke up, looked in the mirror and decided to become somebody else.

I just eventually noticed that the person I had been for most of my life wasn't there anymore.

And apparently his name is Uncle Ben now.

I didn't come up with that either. Somebody else started calling me Uncle Ben. It stuck.

The funny thing is that the name arrived after the person did.

I Made Claude Code Shut the Fuck Up

· 11 min read

I use Claude Code for actual engineering work.

Not:

Write me a function.

More like:

Inspect this repository, understand the architecture, find the problem, make the smallest correct change, test it, verify it, and don't fuck up anything unrelated.

Claude is pretty good at that.

The problem is that after doing the work, coding agents have a tendency to write a fucking autobiography about it.
